Auditions for Cougar Choir will be held at the beginning of the 2nd quarter. Third, fourth and fifth graders will be taught an audition song during music class and may sign up to audition. To be accepted into the choir, the student must have earned "A"s, "B"s and no more than two "C"s. Twenty-five students will be accepted in the choir, and will be chosen by a lottery system. Students that are not chosen initially will be placed on a waiting list. If a spot opens up, the next student on the waiting list will be given an opportunity to join.
Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings after school from 4:00 p. m. - 5:00 p. m. Two unexcused absences from rehearsal may result in a student being removed from the choir (absence from school does not apply).
We will have a minimum of three performances: one in early December, one in March, and the final performance in early May. Field Trip information and performance information will be sent out at least two weeks before any activity.
Conn-West will have three evening performances for the music classes to display what they've learned this year: Kindergarten and 1st grade will have a performance on May 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade will have a performance on November 28th, and 4th and 5th grade will have a performance on February 20th. These performances will be in conjunction with the PTA meetings, and will be counted as a part of each students music grade.
Fourth and fifth grade students will also be playing recorder this year. The school orders the Angel two-piece baroque recorders for the students. Parents can purchase recorders from the school, or may use an approved recorder purchased elsewhere. Once the recorder has been purchased (order forms will be sent home at the beginning of January), the student is responsible for bringing their recorder to music class every day.
